Day 24

June 5 - 38km (Somewhere along the Cabot Trail)

Our goal tomorrow was to go along the Cabot Trail, a scenic but challenging detour. When we woke, the conditions had not improved much; it was a little more visible, but still cold and wet. At this point, I had accepted that wet shoes and socks, chilly mornings and misty views would be my reality for the foreseeable future.

We had to bike over Kelly’s Mountain, which had an elevation gain of 245m over 7km! It was more of a long hill than a mountain, but I was able to do it in pretty good time. I realized how much progress I made since starting in Newfoundland and felt really happy.

We biked quite a bit on the Cabot Trail, but the fog obscured our view of what was supposed to be one of the nicest trails in Canada. At that point, we asked ourselves if it was worth doing the trail if we couldn’t really appreciate it, and we came to a unanimous agreement to skip it and just continue our journey biking across Canada.

Will went to talk to a local resident to get more information; after giving us tea, coffee and some baked goods, they offered us a spot to camp for the night. Thank you Ray and company!
